SESSION 1 - Storyboard and Commercial re-make - Commercial Re-Shoot Project due. Students will watch their classmate's completed commercials and critique each other's work, noting positive accomplishments as well as offering suggestions to improve each other's film making.
SESSION 2 - Montage & Conversation Editing Assignment - Students will storyboard and script a short film to practice editing a montage and a conversation.

WEEK 6 : February 10 - 14
SESSION 1 - Directors and their contributions to Film - Students will learn about the important role a director plays in making a movie. Students will research two directors of their choosing from a list of influential film makers and research their influence on movie making. Students will create a Google Slideshow depicting aspects of their research. The finished slideshow will be turned into Google Classroom by the end of the week.
SESSION 2 - Storyboards and Commercial re-make - Students will learn how to make a storyboard for a movie. They will begin working on their second project which is to recreate a commercial shot-for-shot. Students will select a commercial to recreate, make a storyboard for each shot in the commercial, and begin filming the commercial with appropriate props to make as close of a copied version as possible during the next classes.

WEEK 5 : February 3 - 7
SESSION 1 - First Editing Assignment, day two - Students construct their first "movie" by putting the finishing touches on their edits from their first shooting assignment. Students will experiment with adding music to their video.

SESSION 3 - First Editing Assignment, day four - Students will take a quiz covering vocabulary related to video productions and identifying specific types of shots used in films. Students will finish editing their first movie and will engage in a peer critique of a few of the movies made by their peers to gain exposure to new ideas and be exposed to various "do's and don'ts" of amateur film making. First movie project due at the end of class.
WEEK 4 : January 27 - 31
SESSION 1 - First Shooting Assignment, day two - Students work in in groups to complete the various shots outlined in the assignment shot list. Students will learn how to properly upload video files onto the computer. Keeping media files organized on the computer will be a key element in the editing process.
SESSION 2 - First Shooting Assignment, day three - editing introduction - Students begin to edit their first shots using the Sony Vegas Pro editing software. Students will learn basic editing skills as they begin to organize their first shots into a film narrative.
SESSION 3 - First Editing Assignment, day one - Students construct their first "movie" by putting the finishing touches on their edits from their first shooting assignment. Students will experiment with adding music to their video. Students will also learn how to render their video for submission.
WEEK 3 : January 20 - 24
SESSION 1 - This session was missed due to the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Holiday
SESSION 2 - Shot List and Location - Commercial Shot Analysis DUE. Students will learn about the different ways in which a subject can be framed and shot in a video. Students will receive a shot list of various shots they will need to film around Pau Wa Lu. They will review the directions and watch examples of the various types of shots using the tutorial website linked to their Google Classroom. If students still need to complete their Commercial Shot Analysis, this will be their final time in class to do so.
SESSION 3 - First Shooting Assignment - Students be introduced to class expectations for shooting around campus. Each student will sign off that they understand the class expectations prior to leaving class. Students will also be introduced to how equipment like the camera and tripod are to be handled. Students will begin filming in groups the various shots outlined in the assignment shot list. These shots will be taken over the next few classes and will eventually be used for the first editing assignment. This assignment is in Google Classroom and will be due next week.
WEEK 2 : January 13 - 17
SESSION 1 - Movie Poster research, creation and production - Students will continue to work on creating their personal movie poster. They will make sure it contains the key elements of a movie poster, is interesting, informative and colorful. The assignment is described on Google Classroom and examples are provided there as well. This completed project will be due next session.
SESSION 2 - Introduction to different types of camera shots - Personal Movie Poster DUE. Students will learn about the different ways in which a subject can be framed and shot in a video. Students will select a subject and find different images that represent examples of each type of shot. This assignment is explained on Google Classroom with examples.
SESSION 3 - Comparing "short movie stories" - analyzing commercials - Students will use their new knowledge of the various types of camera shots to analyze the number and types of shots used in two different :30 second commercials which the students select. Students will analyze each commercial, describe similarities and differences, and eventually explain why they preferred one style of filming over another. This will help guide students in their own film making this semester. This assignment is in Google Classroom and will be due next week.

SESSION 2 - Introduction to Video Productions - Students will begin the daily routine of recording a vocabulary word each class period that will be part of the "language" used in Video Productions. This expectation will be important to follow as projects and assessments throughout the semester require an understanding of these various terms. Students will also begin the process of telling a story and peeking a viewer's interest by choosing key words and images that make an impact. Each student will begin to create a "movie poster" that represents some aspect of their individual life. Students will study various styles of movie posters prior to beginning their own.

SESSION 1 - Two Editing Cuts Assignment Completion - Students practice utilizing various editing cuts in this assignment as they select 2-3 different cuts that have been presented in class to create film clips that utilize these editing techniques. Final edited and rendered version of "Two Editing Cuts" is due at the end of the session. Students will also take a quiz over daily vocabulary terms and analyze assorted film clips to properly identify specific editing techniques they have been learning about and practicing in class.
SESSION 2 - Peer "movie critique" - Students will choose from their recent assignments one completed cut to share their classmates. Students will be "film critics" for each other's work as they note skills and techniques from each sample that they liked and offer suggestions to make the work more technical or enjoyable. Students will be required to critique the pros and cons of each sample. By the end of the semester, all students will share samples of their work for peer critiques.

SESSION 1 - Filming and Editing "The Delivery" - Students will film their version of the short film, "The Delivery", based on their personalized script and storyboard.

WEEK 8 : September 30 - October 4
SESSION 1 - Storyboard or Script: "The Delivery" - Students will create their first short based on an idea presented by Mr. Kyle. Students will plan out their shots, create a script with dialogue and plan the use of props and scenery before they begin filming their story.
SESSION 2 - Filming "The Delivery" - Students will begin to film their version of the short film, "The Delivery", based on their personalized script and storyboard.
SESSION 3 - Filming and Editing "The Delivery" - Students will complete the filming and begin editing of their short film, "The Delivery". Students will also need to make sure their V: folders are organized as Mr. Kyle will be checking to make sure all media files and completed projects are properly organized for points.
WEEK 7 : September 23 - 26
SESSION 1 - Three Editing Skills: Green Screen - Students will complete the final edit of their shots to show they learned how to edit using three specific skills. Today will focus how to change the background of a scene using a green screen.

SESSION 1 - Three Editing Skills - Students will learn how to edit films in slow motion, fast motion and how to use a green screen to change the background of a scene as part of this activity.

Wednesday is a Late Start Day
SESSION 1 - Filming / Editing "The Visitor" - Students will continue to film and edit their first short film, "The Visitor".
SESSION 2 - Filming / Editing "The Visitor" - Students will continue to film and edit their first short film, "The Visitor". The completed short film will be due on Thursday at the beginning of the class session.
SESSION 3 - "The Visitor" film festival - Each student will submit their edited version of "The Visitor" for assessment. Students will then watch various versions of the film completed by their classmates to critique what was done well and what could be improved upon.
WEEK 4 : September 2 - 6

SESSION 1 - Labor Day - No School
SESSION 2 - Filming / Editing "The Visitor" - Students will begin to film (and possibly begin to edit) their first short film, "The Visitor". Each student group will follow a specific script of shots, but will have flexibility to frame scenes. Students will also have control over the very limited dialogue in this first assignment. Three "actors" will be needed within each group. Students will each be responsible for editing a version of "The Visitor" which will be submitted to Mr. Kyle for grading.
SESSION 3 - Filming / Editing "The Visitor" - Students will continue to film and edit their first short film, "The Visitor".
WEEK 3 : August 26 - 30
SESSION 1 - Six Shots editing - Students will edit their six shots on the computer and practice inserting title slides and transitions between each of the six shots.
SESSION 2 - Sony Vegas Pro 15.0 tutorial - Students will watch at least one tutorial (three are provided) to learn about the basic editing tools within the Vegas Pro editing program each student will use to complete projects in class. Students will practice what they learn on their "six shots" clips from last week. Students will also learn how to properly save their media files and projects in folders on the class V: drive so that files won't "get lost" in production.
SESSION 3 - Six Shots editing, final - Students will complete the editing process on their six shots as they practice the various editing features available on the Vegas Pro 15.0 editing software.
WEEK 2 : August 19 - 23
SESSION 1 - Movie Poster, completion - Students will complete their movie posters with attention to all details in preparation for turning in this first assignment of the year which will be due at the beginning of the next session.
SESSION 2 - Six Shots overview - Student movie poster DUE. Students will begin to learn about the six types of shots that are used when filming a video. Expectations for filming around the school will be stressed. In groups, students will then use cameras to practice filming each of the specific styles of shots that they will be using throughout the semester to create their video stories.
SESSION 3 - Six Shots completion and editing introduction - Students will complete their six shots exercise and begin to upload their shots onto the computer to begin the editing process. The program for video editing that is used on the school computer is VEGAS Pro version 15.0. Students will work on exploring the various features of the program as they begin to edit their shots.
WEEK 1 : August 12 - 16
SESSION 1 - Welcome and Class Overview - Students will get an overview of the class and learn about expectations for starting class, individual responsibilities and behavior when completing group tasks. Students will learn about how the elements of a movie poster are used to promote a film and will brainstorm ideas to create a "movie poster" about an event from their summer or something they hope to accomplish during the upcoming semester.
SESSION 2 - Movie Poster work - Students will continue to create their movie poster, moving from their rough draft and ideas to putting together the elements of a good poster on their final poster paper. Special attention to word choice, color and imagery will be emphasized.
SESSION 3 - Movie Poster work, day two - Students will move toward the final steps of completing their personal movie poster which will be due at the beginning of the second session next week.

Students will be required to critique the pros and cons of each sample. By the end of the semester, all students will share samples of their work for peer critiques.
SESSION 3 - Film maker's choice: Animation or Commercial recreation - Students will peer review / critique a couple more examples of their classmate's work. Students will also be introduced to their next assignment in which they have the choice of creating a stop-motion animation short or recreating a television commercial shot for shot. Tutorials and examples for both option are posted on Google Classroom. This completed project will be due in approximately two weeks.
WEEK 10 : October 14 - 18
SESSION 1 - Two Editing Cuts Assignment - Students practice utilizing various editing cuts in this assignment as they select 2-3 different cuts that have been presented in class to create film clips that utilize these editing techniques. Students will create a storyboard for their editing cuts prior to filming.

SESSION 3 - Show What you Know - Students will complete the editing of their "Two Editing Cuts" assignment and turn in the rendered version prior to the end of the session. Final edited and rendered version of "Two Editing Cuts" is due at the end of the session. Students will also take a quiz over daily vocabulary terms and analyze assorted film clips to properly identify specific editing techniques they have been learning about and practicing in class.
WEEK 9 : October 7 - 11
SESSION 1 - Filming and Editing "The Delivery" - Students will film their version of the short film, "The Delivery", based on their personalized script and storyboard.

SESSION 3 - Editing "The Delivery" - Students will complete the filming and begin editing of their short film, "The Delivery". Final edited and rendered version of "The Delivery" due at the end of the session.
WEEK 8 : September 30 - October 4
SESSION 1 - Storyboard or Script: "The Delivery" - Students will create their first short based on an idea presented by Mr. Kyle. Students will plan out their shots, create a script with dialogue and plan the use of props and scenery before they begin filming their story.
SESSION 2 - Filming "The Delivery" - Students will begin to film their version of the short film, "The Delivery", based on their personalized script and storyboard.
SESSION 3 - Filming and Editing "The Delivery" - Students will complete the filming and begin editing of their short film, "The Delivery". Students will also need to make sure their V: folders are organized as Mr. Kyle will be checking to make sure all media files and completed projects are properly organized for points.
WEEK 7 : September 23 - 26
SESSION 1 - Three Editing Skills: Green Screen - Students will complete the final edit of their shots to show they learned how to edit using three specific skills. Today will focus how to change the background of a scene using a green screen.

SESSION 3 - Three Editing Skills: Project Completion - Students will complete the final edit of their shots to show they learned how to edit using three specific skills and submit the final rendered cut to their properly named folder on the V: drive. The final cut of all seven examples will be due by the end this session today.

SESSION 1 - Three Editing Skills - Students will learn how to edit films in slow motion, fast motion and how to use a green screen to change the background of a scene as part of this activity.
SESSION 2 - Filming "Three Editing Skills" - Students will continue to film and edit their shots to learn how to edit specific skills.
SESSION 3 - Filming & Editing "Three Editing Skills" - Students will continue to film and edit their shots to learn how to edit specific skills. The final cut of all seven examples will be due by the end of their first session next week.
WEEK 5 : September 9 - 13
Wednesday is a Late Start Day
SESSION 1 - Filming / Editing "The Visitor" - Students will continue to film and edit their first short film, "The Visitor".
SESSION 2 - Filming / Editing "The Visitor" - Students will continue to film and edit their first short film, "The Visitor". The completed short film will be due on Thursday at the beginning of the class session.
SESSION 3 - "The Visitor" film festival - Each student will submit their edited version of "The Visitor" for assessment. Students will then watch various versions of the film completed by their classmates to critique what was done well and what could be improved upon.
WEEK 4 : September 2 - 6

SESSION 1 - Labor Day - No School
SESSION 2 - Filming / Editing "The Visitor" - Students will begin to film (and possibly begin to edit) their first short film, "The Visitor". Each student group will follow a specific script of shots, but will have flexibility to frame scenes. Students will also have control over the very limited dialogue in this first assignment. Three "actors" will be needed within each group. Students will each be responsible for editing a version of "The Visitor" which will be submitted to Mr. Kyle for grading.
SESSION 3 - Filming / Editing "The Visitor" - Students will continue to film and edit their first short film, "The Visitor".
WEEK 3 : August 26 - 30
SESSION 1 - Six Shots editing - Students will edit their six shots on the computer and practice inserting title slides and transitions between each of the six shots.
SESSION 2 - Sony Vegas Pro 15.0 tutorial - Students will watch at least one tutorial (three are provided) to learn about the basic editing tools within the Vegas Pro editing program each student will use to complete projects in class. Students will practice what they learn on their "six shots" clips from last week. Students will also learn how to properly save their media files and projects in folders on the class V: drive so that files won't "get lost" in production.
SESSION 3 - Six Shots editing, final - Students will complete the editing process on their six shots as they practice the various editing features available on the Vegas Pro 15.0 editing software.
WEEK 2 : August 19 - 23
SESSION 1 - Movie Poster, completion - Students will complete their movie posters with attention to all details in preparation for turning in this first assignment of the year which will be due at the beginning of the next session.
SESSION 2 - Six Shots overview - Student movie poster DUE. Students will begin to learn about the six types of shots that are used when filming a video. Expectations for filming around the school will be stressed. In groups, students will then use cameras to practice filming each of the specific styles of shots that they will be using throughout the semester to create their video stories.
SESSION 3 - Six Shots completion and editing introduction - Students will complete their six shots exercise and begin to upload their shots onto the computer to begin the editing process. The program for video editing that is used on the school computer is VEGAS Pro version 15.0. Students will work on exploring the various features of the program as they begin to edit their shots.
WEEK 1 : August 12 - 16
SESSION 1 - Welcome and Class Overview - Students will get an overview of the class and learn about expectations for starting class, individual responsibilities and behavior when completing group tasks. Students will learn about how the elements of a movie poster are used to promote a film and will brainstorm ideas to create a "movie poster" about an event from their summer or something they hope to accomplish during the upcoming semester.
SESSION 2 - Movie Poster work - Students will continue to create their movie poster, moving from their rough draft and ideas to putting together the elements of a good poster on their final poster paper. Special attention to word choice, color and imagery will be emphasized.
SESSION 3 - Movie Poster work, day two - Students will move toward the final steps of completing their personal movie poster which will be due at the beginning of the second session next week.
